Elizabeth Brown
Elizabeth Brown was appointed by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to the OMERS Sponsors Corporation (SC) Board effective January 1, 2025. She serves as a member of the Corporate Governance & Risk Committee and Plan Design Committee.
Ms. Brown, a founding partner of Toronto-based pension law boutique BMKP Law, is an experienced pension, benefits, and executive compensation lawyer. She has advised public and private sector employers and provincial governments on pension plan governance, compliance, and administration.
Ms. Brown regularly provides advice to jointly sponsored pension plan sponsors. She was lead pension counsel acting on behalf of the founding universities in the multi-year establishment of the University Pension Plan (UPP) effective January 1, 2020 and she currently acts as legal advisor to the Employer Sponsor Committee of the UPP. In 2021, she was appointed by a provincial government to serve on a three-person expert panel examining the financial health of a large jointly sponsored defined benefit pension plan in Eastern Canada. In 2023 she was retained to provide advice to the Sponsor Board of a jointly sponsored plan in Western Canada.
Ms. Brown also has extensive experience advising clients on the pension aspects of insolvencies and restructuring and appears as pension litigation counsel. She is recognized for her expertise by The Best Lawyers in Canada, Chambers Global, Chambers Canada; the Legal 500 Canada; and Who's Who Legal: Canada. A former Chair of the National Pension and Benefits Section of the Canadian Bar Association, Ms. Brown received the Ontario Bar Association Award of Excellence in Pensions and Benefits Law in 2017.
Prior to obtaining her law degree (LL.B from Osgoode Hall) and her Master of Laws (University of Leicester), Ms. Brown obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Queen’s University, Kingston following which she spent a year in Vienna, Austria where she continued her piano studies.
