Emily's Story
Meet Emily, a new OMERS member and employee at the Town of Orangeville. Although retirement is a long way off, Emily knows that her pension contributions will add up to support her retirement dreams.
“When I get my paycheque, it’s automatically deducted. The money is going into my pension. One day, when I’m ready to retire that money will be there, which is nice.”
I love helping people, I love making people feel happy and making them just joyful. In high school, I came home one night and was so upset because everybody knew exactly what they wanted to do and, I'm like, I really don't know. So, my mom was like, "Hey, what about Human Resources? You know, you get to help people as well. Why don't you try that?"
So, I'm a Human Resources Clerk at the town of Orangeville and I do a lot of recruitment. That's one of my biggest jobs. A lot of it is assisting my manager and the Human Resources and Health and Safety Officer. I really guide them and help them do their job. I've been with the town for six months, and I love it, and I want to be there for forever. When I started, my colleague she showed me OMERS, and I didn't know too much about pension plans. Especially, I was on contract positions before the town of Orangeville. We went through it a little bit and, she's like, "Here is the online module." I went to check it out. It's easy. When I get my paycheck, it's automatically deducted. The money is just going into my pension, and one day, when I'm ready to retire, that money is going to be there for me, which is nice.
I'm super blessed to have everything I have in my life. My dream for retirement right now ... I want to be just like my grandpa because he is so active at 86 years old. Just enjoy. Just enjoy life even more than we do.
